The temple of Pashupatinath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated 5 Kms East of Kathmandu on the banks of sacred Bagmati River.

The temple of Pashupatinath attracts thousands of pilgrims each year and has become well known far beyond the Kathmandu Valley.

One story about Pashupatinath temple is that one time Siva took the form of a one-horned stag to avoid some obligations he had and then fled to here.
Various gods followed him and catching him here broke off his horn, which became the Pashupatinath linga.
It is said that the linga was lost for a while, until he was found under a spot where a cow was dropping her milk.

Benefits of Pashupatinath temple worship

Daily and Special Pashupatinath puja
Every morning the west door of the sanctum is opened by the Bhandaris (store-keepers) at 4 AM, from when worship of Pashupatinath begins. At half past nine in the morning the other three doors of Pashupatinath temple are also opened.
After bathing the lingum of Pashupatinath with holy waters, sacred worship by Panchamrit Abhishek (consecration by ghee, milk, honey, sugar and curd) is done by the priests.
Between 1 to 1:30 PM in the afternoon, the lingum of Pashupatinath is elegantly dressed up in gorgeous costume, made of brocade and set with tripunda (sandal paste mark) Chattras (umbrellas) are also placed on the four heads.
On the top head of Pashupatinath , the graphic Shri Yantra is drawn with sandal paste. Arti is performed then.
Later Bhog is offered to Pashupatinath. In the evening Arti of Pashupatinath performed once again after dusk.
Special worships in Pashupatinath temple are done on festivals i.e. full moon day ( Purnamasi ) the Ekadasi (The eleventh day of the new and full moon fortnights) and other auspicious days of the year.
The sandalwood for making the sandal paste for Shri Yantra is brought from Mysore in India.
It has been a tradition of Pashupatinath temple to appoint a priest from south of vindhyachala in India who can worship Pashupatnath.
