Being the daughter of the Himalyas("the abode of snow") she´s known as Gauri("the white one").As the mother of the universe she is Amba or Ambika ,both words have an equal meaning ,"mother"
Parvati is the power and wife of Lord Shiva. A big variety of the goddesses in Hinduism are representing aspects of Parvati.
The names she´s known and worshipped are a lot and depending to regions and stories.
The names Parvati,Girija and Dakshayani are indicating her origin from the Himalaya(Parvati for example means "daughter of the mountains") or Daksha(one of the forefathers of the mankind). Others like Sati,Uma or Aparna are containing to stories in the Pauranic literature.
One of the earliest refrences to this deity is found in the Kenopanishad where she is mentioned as "Uma Haimivati" enlightening Indra ,the king of gods, about Brahman, the absolute or God.
Out of this we can conclude that the belief is a very ancient one.
According to the Pauranic literature, she was in her first incarnation Dakshayani ,the daughter of Daksha and Prasuti, and married to Lord Shiva.Unable to understand Lord Shiva´s greatness , Daksha once reviled him and starting harbouring hatred towards him . When undertook the performance of a great sacrifice , the notable exception among the dignitaries invited was Shiva himself. Much against the advice of her spouse Dakshayani went to the sacrifice uninvited and being slighted ,ended her life by igniting herself through the fire of yoga.Hence she came to be known as Sati , the chaste one.
She was next reborn as Parvati , the daughter of Himavan and Mena. After performing intense austeries she succeeded in pleasing Shiva and accepting her again as his consort.
During the performance of these severe austeries , she refused to eat even dry leafes to sustain herself and got the appellation Aparna. Her mother Mena unable to see her daughter languishing by austeries , tried to dissuade her by the words "U ma",that means "my dear ,don´t do like this!", which became her other name(Uma).
Being the daughter of the Himalyas("the abode of snow") she´s known as Gauri("the white one").As the mother of the universe she is Amba or Ambika ,both words have an equal meaning ,"mother".
