This Year Navaratri Starts on 16 March. Vijaya Dasami or Dashai is on 24 March.
Mother Durga had said in Purana:-
" who ever do my puja in Dashai and Navarati, that person will get my grace and fortune will follow him .
It was on this day that Arjun worshipped Devi, before starting the battle against the Kauravas on the field of Kurukshetra.
Sri Ram worshipped Durga at the time of the fight with Ravan, to invoke her aid in the war. This was on the days preceding the Vijaya Dasami day.
Navaratri is popularly observed twice a year, once in the month of Chaitra and then in Aswayuja (September-October). Navaratri lasts for nine days in honor of the nine manifestations of Durga.
There are four Navaratri in one year. Other two navarati is known as secret Navaratri. Tantra devotee do Sadhana secretly.
During Navaratri (the Word literally means "nine nights") devotees of Durga observe a fast. Brahmins are fed and prayers are offered for the protection of health and property.
One basic aim of this celebration is to propitiate Shakti, the Goddess in Her aspect as
Power, to bestow upon man all wealth, auspiciousness, prosperity, knowledge and all other potent powers.
Whatever be the particular or special request that everyone may put before the Goddess, whatever boon may be asked of Her, the one thing behind all these is propitiation, worship and linking oneself with Her.
It is held in commemoration of the victory of Durga over Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed demon. In Bengal Her image is worshipped for nine days and then cast into water. The tenth day is called Vijaya Dasami or Dussera (the "tenth day").
Durga Puja is the greatest Hindu festival in which God is adored as Mother. Vedic Hinduism is the only religion in the world which has emphasized to such an extent the motherhood of God.
One's relationship with one's mother is the dearest and the sweetest of all human relations.
Hence, it is proper to look upon God as mother. Shakti is the omnipotent power of the Lord, or the Cosmic Energy.
The Divine Mother Durga is represented as having ten different weapons in Her hands. She sits on a lion.
Goddess Durga keeps up the play of the Lord through the three attributes of Nature, namely, Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas. Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, are all her forms.
All beings in the universe are Shakti-worshippers, whether they are aware of it or not, for there is no one who does not love and long for power in some form or other.
Physicists and scientists have now proved that everything is pure, imperishable energy. This energy is only a form of divine Shakti which exists in every form.
The Mother's Grace is boundless. Her mercy is illimitable; Mother Durga knowledge infinite; Mother Durga power immeasurable; Goddess Durga glory ineffable. Mother Durga gives you material prosperity as well as spiritual freedom.
Navaratri is the most suitable occasion for doing intense spiritual practices. These nine days are very important to gain cosmic power by doing Mother Durga Vedic Puja and Tantric pooja.
Goddess Durga fought with Bhandasura and his forces for nine days and nine nights. This
Bhandasura had a wonderful birth and life. When Lord Shiva burnt Cupid with the fire of His "third eye",Sri Ganesh playfully mounded a figure out of the ashes, and the Lord breathed life into it! This was the terrible demonBhandasura.
He engaged himself in great penance and on account of it obtained a boon from Lord Shiva. With the help of that boon, he began harassing the worlds. The Divine Mother Durga fought with him for nine nights (the demons have extraordinary strength during the night), and killed him on the evening of the tenth day, known as the Vijaya Dasami.
The learning of any science is begun on this highly auspicious day. It was on this day that
Arjun worshipped Devi, before starting the battle against the Kauravas on the field of
Kurukshetra.
Sri Ram worshipped Durga at the time of the fight with Ravan, to invoke her aid in the war. This was on the days preceding the Vijaya Dasami day. He fought and won through Her Grace. This day, however, has much to do with the life of Sri Ram.
The story of Sri Ram is known in almost all parts of the globe, and if we but succeed in following even a hundredth part of His teachings, we shall make our lives more fragrant than the rose and more lustrous than gold! Dasai or Dussera can also be interpreted as "Dasa-Hara", which means the cutting of the ten heads of Ravana.
This nine days' celebration is offered to the Mother for Goddess Durga successful struggle with the
formidable demons led by Mahishasura. But, to the sincere spiritual aspirant, the particular division of the Navaratri into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the Supreme Goddess has a very sublime, yet thoroughly practical truth to reveal.
In its cosmic aspect, it epitomizes the stages of the evolution of man into God, from Jivahood (the state of individualisation) to Shivahood (the state of Self-realization). In its individual import, it shows the course that his spiritual practice should take.
The tenth day is known as Vijaya Dashmi as Mother Durga killed the demon and its the same day when Ram killed Raman.
During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life.
MA Durga is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything. Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects.
The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.
